So what time is it in New York State?

Lessons that underage children can work vary depending on their ages, the nature of their work and whether they attend or not. The state of New York has one of the most stringent children's labour legislation in the state. Legislation restricts the number of lessons that children under 18 years of age are entitled to work during their education.

In order to work between 10 pm and 12 pm on the eve of a class date, 16- and 17-year-olds need a parental or guardian's consent in writing and a letter of completion of schooling. Home-trained students are not allowed to work during the opening times of the municipal schools. In most professions, during schooling, the age of 14 and 15 years is restricted to the following hours:

Undergraduates participating in an accredited cooperative education programme may work up to 6 lessons a working days prior to a particular academic year, provided that the lessons are part of the programme. In case the language course is not in class and during the holidays (the language course must be closed during the whole working week): Minors with a work certification can work in the schools they attend during their midday break in canteens.

Employers must draw up a timetable for all children and enter it where employees can see it. Timetable shows the times when children begin and end their work and the time earmarked for meal. Employers can modify working times as long as they enter the changes in the timetable.

Underage persons may only work on the dates and at the hours indicated in the timetable. Presence of a minor at other hours or no timetable is a breach of the Children's Labour Code.
