Gannett's papers at Westchester Bar Backing Candidate
October 31, WHITE PLAINS - Westchester Rockland News Papers, a member of the Gannett family, has chosen not to sponsor any of the three Westchester Executive nominees. Contrary to a number of other Metropoleitan area papers that have ruled that they would no longer be supporting politics candidate, Westchester Rockland's choice has been ascribed to a shortage of trust in this year's campaign.
Westchester Rockland Group Chairman and Editor Thomas P. Dolan said: "We felt we could not help either of them. Advocations are, however, made for the regional nominees. Yesterdays announcement of the move caused a sensation in politicians, especially the Democrats, who had been hoping to get help for their nominee, Mayor Alfred B. DelBello of Yonkers.
Mr DelBello faces Counties Secretary Edward N. Vetrano, the Republican Conservative, in what is anticipated to be one of the nearest race in the countyslaught. Discussing the Westchester Rockland newspaper's ruling also concentrated on stories from politicians that Governor Rockefeller had tried to interfere in the issue.
However, the spokesperson acknowledged that Mr Rockefeller and Mr Dolan had consulted by telephone before the ruling. Mr. Vetrano, nor did the governor ask that they not support mayor delBello," the spokesperson said. Westchester Rockland News Papers owns eight of the nine dailies in the Shire and has a print run of 185,000 copies per day.
