Ulster County, NY | The perfect base for skiing and boarding in the Hudson Valley

Part of the charm of Ulster County is in the fact that during any time of year, be it vernal, sommer, autumn or winters, there is a wealth of beauties from our unspoilt geographical area and a tons of outdoor activity for the inhabitants (and visitors!) to savor all of them. Surprisingly, in a land encircled by some of the most stunning and popular ridges in the land (the Catskills, Appalachians and Adirondacks, to name but a few), these peaks are home to some of the best ski resorts in the north-east.

Whilst Ulster County itself is home to only a small number of skiing resorts, the many resorts in the Hudson Valley and the Ulster area make it the ideal starting point for downhill and cross-country skiing and other sports lovers who are longing for a wide range of skiing opportunities without having to cross the United States to find them.

Ulster County guests have a variety of skis available within an hour's driving distance, or if you have a home here or can renew your stay, even more astonishing mountaineering outreach. If you are taking a little ride on a top-notch hill or just spending a few hour snowtubing with your friends and your families in the next skipark, you will find it here in the Catskills.

Woodstock, NY, in North Ulster County, is a great place and home for the skier, with several Catskill Mountain resorts less than an hours walk from your front doorstep, so you are never too far away from the pistes. When you can increase your travelling time and go for a few more hrs, you have more hills and resorts to choose from.

Woodstock is only 3-4 hrs from some of the world's most sought-after northeastern and global peaks, such as Killington, Vermont (nicknamed "The Beast") and Whiteface Mountain, where some of the 1980 Winter Olympics took place. Now that we know where we live, where do we ski?

Belleayre County is home to Belleayre Mountain, a first-class resort that is only getting better and better, and Sawkill Familyskillsski Center, a small "mountain" (if you could call it that) that would be a good place for beginner skiers to study the fundamentals and get their feet soaked before they start on a bigger piste or to take their families for an afternoons ride, but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to planing their next skiing holiday.

Are you willing to take off your shoes and skies and see where your next adventurous day on the slopes could take you? Ulster County skiing: Belleayre Mountain, Ulster County's top class resort, is considered the frontrunner of our Catskill region's snow sports and has contributed to driving the commercial catalytic converter that Catskill has produced over the last 50+ years.

There are over 50 tracks, from light and lush slopes to challenging slopes with a difference in altitude of 1,404 ft, 8 elevators and 4 llodges, so there is something for everyone to explore at all levels. The Belleayre is also home to New York's first New York resort chair lift system, founded in 1949.

Belleayre had 70,000 skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts on the mountains every year in 1995, today there are 175,000 skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts from all over the globe! Belleayre does not intend to slow down in the foreseeable future as a skiing industrial pilot; they are currently extending their beginners' area with additional classrooms, two progressive zones and several mogul slopes as well as the cafeterias and inns.

Under the slogan "Perfection in progress" and with all the ongoing upgrades and extensions, there is a good possibility that in a few years Belleayre will not only be the first skiing centre in Ulster County, but also a real skiing area, comparable to some of the large skiing areas in the Adirondacks and Vermont area.

If you are coming from outside the city, Belleayre offers on-site accommodation and accommodation to prolong your enjoyment of the slopes for as long as you like. Owing a home in this area now can have even greater rewards down the line when Belleayre extends into the Epic Valley that Ulster County already thinks it is!

Perhaps the smallest skiing area on the East Coast, or (and they are proud of it!) Sawkill Family Skicenter has 2 slopes with a 70 feet difference in altitude and a magical rug-lifter, as well as a snow-making facility that can run on most of its slopes.

For the more seasoned skiers, you may want to jump over this stop, but if you're new to the pistes, the Sawkill Family Skicenter would be a great starting point, as it's more of a study centre where children or grown-ups can study skiing before they embark on a bigger uphill.

Cross-country skiin': Hunter Mountain is one of the largest ski areas just across the Greene County boundary and is also home to many musical and major event celebrations in early and late springs, summers and autumns before the winter is over. There are 58 cross-country ski runs, ranging from beginners to experts, and Hunter Mountain has over 240 hectares of ski area with an altitude difference of 1,600 feet.

If you have non-skiing members of your immediate relatives, they will be glad to come with you to Hunter, as there is a lot to do at the alpine resorts, which includes grocery stores, Van Winkle's restaurants and bars (with culinary and public meal options) and even spas. Wind Ham also offers 1,600 feet of altitude difference on its 54 tracks.

There are also many opportunities for overnight skiers in Windham, with over 50 hectares of ski area on 9 cross-country ski runs if you don't have enough daytime ski runs. Even with accommodation, food and on-site spas there is no need to abandon this alpine village, if you like.

Your open-air theme area is a great choice for a funny afternoons with the whole host of kids, where you can go snowtubus, skating, or for adrenaline-loving kids, drive a children size snowmobil! They cover 99% of the area and have a combined 7 ski slopes that take you to 1,000 ft and the longest descent in the Berkshire Mountains.

Cathamount also has 15 cross-country tracks that cover over 4 leagues of off-road for overnight-skiing! In Roxbury, Greene County, lies Plattekill Hill, which includes 38 cross-country tracks and 4 lift facilities with some of the most demanding cross-country tracks and an all-terrain area. Plattekill is a very favourite MTB resort in summers, when there is no powder, with bike rental, starter packs and tickets for the first time.

35 min from Danbury, Connecticut, you may not find a skiing hill in the area, but unfortunately there is Thunder Ridge with 22 cross-country tracks from beginners to advanced skiers, a skiing academy and a skiing race for kids from 6 to 19 years. You can even take a subway from NYC and the area to Patterson station and get to the north.

Situated in the northwest of Connecticut, this was the first resort to work with native engineering in the early 1940' to develop the first snow-making system ever to be used in a skiing area, laying the foundation for the technologies that are now used worldwide. Featuring 25 cross-country tracks, 8 elevators and a difference in altitude of 650 ft, this small village has everything you could wish for on a skiapp.

The nearest to the NYC Metro, it is a popular place for skiers in either cold and hot weather (in summers, the MTB and water parks are the major attractions). In addition to 46 cross-country tracks and 8 elevators, all of which are open for overnight skiers during the December-March seasons, there is also a 30-lane artificial turf whirlpool area with a Wonder Rug Lift, instruction and rental of gear, as well as accommodation on site with many comforts.

The Jiminy Peak Resort is another great skiing area not so far from Woodstock with 45 cross-country tracks and 9 elevators, hire, lessons as well as luxurious accommodation. There is also a hill theme playground with downhill toboggans and saucers, as well as an air theme playground, which is open for outdoor activities in the peak.

Situated directly in front of Adirondack Park, the West Mountain Skiresort has more than 30 tracks on 126 hectares, from simple lush cross-country tracks to professional diamonds. The snow-making facilities provide excellent snow-making, even if the weather is not good with mothers. Gore Mountain is one of New York's most loved resorts and one of Adirondack's most loved resorts, with over 109 cross-country tracks and a difference in altitude of 2,537 feet.

15 ski elevators, one of which is an 8-seater Northwoods gondola, allow you to enjoy more ski run times instead of having to wait for the uphill. North Creek Ski Bowl Dorfhang and Tube ing Parc is open at nights, under the light and there are many accommodation, eating and shops.

Vermont's most southerly area, Mount Snow, has a lot to do all year round, but in winters the mountains come into being. Besides 590 hectares of slopes and 85 tracks, there are other snow sports such as cross-country running, dogsledding, sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoe hiking, snowshoe trekking, and more.

The Camelback Mountain is a favourite Pocono Mountain Resort (Lodge, Action Parks and Indoor/Outdoor Water Parks are equal major rides in summer), which also has the largest snow tubing resort in the USA. Its 34 cross-country tracks offer space for all levels of ability, and with a combined of 16 lift facilities, they bring you quickly to your destination.
