Established in 1687 by Netherlandish colonists, the town of Poughkeepsie was established in 1799 as a town and in 1854 as a town. After the American Revolution, it was the second New York metropolis. In 1788, after the New York State ratification convention was passed in the Market Street Court House, where John Jay, Alexander Hamilton and George Clinton passed the US Constitution and made it possible for New York to ratify the eleventh Amendment.
Hudson River flows along the western side of the town and is therefore affectionately called "Queen of the Hudson". Situated in the eighteenth ward of Congress, it is the county town of Dutchess County, with the Democrat Sean Maloney as its representative. Republican Robert Rolison is the town' s canon. Poughkeepsie is home to seven ancient neighborhoods and five ancient monuments, among them the Bardavon 1869 Opera House, the Clinton House, the Adriance Library, the Glebe House and the Cunneen-Hackett Arts Center.
A number of art and leisure facilities exist in the town. Since Poughkeepsie is halfway between New York and Albany, many of them commutate on the Poughkeepsie station, which operates both Metro North and Amtrak routes. Dutchess County LOOP is used as a shuttleship to help locals move around the county, mainly along the main roads.
