Family fun all year round in 5 Hudson Valley cities
Learn more about the Hudson Valley. Hudson Valley was my family's recreational area when I was a child. Near enough to New York that the children could make the trip; far enough to make you felt away; with lots of countryside, lovely little cities and historical places to round off your holiday.
Hudson Valley is still an excellent base for daily or week-end excursions from various parts of the northeast, but especially from New York City. You will find all year round rides and various outdoor and indoor events throughout the year. Below, Vanessa Ahern, a Hudson Valley inhabitant, gives us an overview of her favourite places to go with her 7- and 10-year-old girls.
Both my man and I loved this area before we had our children, but they did help us find the family-friendly side of this unusual traveler. First there is the Catskill Mountain Rail Road trip along the Esopus River. While the children are enjoying the landscape on the old-fashioned trains.
After a long drive, give your children a run through the lovely Lions Mini Park play area within easy walk of the city-centre. We like the doughnuts at Pete's Place. Children and grown-ups go ga-ga about the distribution of artisanal bio and Fairtrade chocolate.
When the children still have power, visit Tribute Garden Park in the city with its Pirateship, Fire Engine and Slider. During the weekends, if you want to keep the children tired for an early night's sleep, make an overnight reservation at the Rocking Horse or Pine Grove Resort.
They both have horseback rides, swimming baths, open-air swimming baths and water playgrounds, children's games, fun and lots of fun. Forward zippered linings to older children while you go to the spa. This is Vanessa Ahern's blog about Hudson Valley eating, happenings and goals in Hudson Valley Good Stuff.
