Upstate is the area in the most western part of South Carolina, USA, also known as Upcountry, which is the name. although loose among local defines the general catchment include the ten ranks of the commercially prosperous I-85 corridor in the northwestern corner of South Carolina.

Located between Atlanta and Charlotte, the Upstate is the most rapidly expanding area of South Carolina and the geographic centre of the mega-region Charlanta. Following BMW's original investments, international firms, also from Germany, have a strong foothold in the upstate; several major groups have set up local, domestic or international head offices in the area.

Other important industrial sectors in Upstate are health care and the pharmaceutical sector.
The Greenville Hospital System and Bon Secours St. Francis Health System are the biggest in the health care industry, while Bausch & Lomb has established smaller, recently established domestic businesses such as IRIX Manufacturing, Incorporated and Pharma Associates. Upstate also hosts a large number of research institutions in the residential and academic sectors, such as R&D institutions for Michelin, Fuji and General Electric, as well as research centres supporting the automobile, lifecycle, plastics and photonic industry.

Upstate is serviced by two large motorways, the I-85 and the I-26. Greenville-Spartanburg International is the largest regional international aerodrome, almost half way between Greenville and Spartanburg in the Greer suburb.
Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Clemson, Pickens, Union and Gaffney all have smaller airports. Crescent Line services stop at Spartanburg, Greenville and Clemson. 3 local papers serve the Upstate region: Greenville News, the (Spartanburg) Herald-Journal and the Anderson Independent-Mail, each serving their own town and surroundings.
Upstate is part of the much wider Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson-Asheville marketing area, which stretches to the west of North Carolina and the north-east of Georgia.
