Mitchell is CCO of Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, W, Teen Vogue and Them, where he oversees sales responsibility and market direction for the Vanity Fair series. Most recently, Mitchell was editor and CRO of Vanity Fair, a position he assumed in September 2014. Mitchell was Condé Nast appointed CRO of the Year in 2016 for surpassing the company's aggressiveness in achieving targeted digitally based expansion, increasing Vanity Fair's revenues from digitally generated advertisements by 71% and its revenues from videos by 41% year-on-year.

Previously, Mitchell was GQ's VP and publishing partner, which he brought to new records in 2013. From Condé Nast Traveler, he came to GQ, where he had been VP and Publishing since February 2009. Before Condé Nast Traveler, Mitchell was WIRED Media's VP and Editor.

From 2004 to 2008, Mitchell was also VP and Editor of Details, from 2001 to 2004, Associate Editor of The New Yorker, and from 2000 to 2001, Editor of ONE, an independant designer journal and website.
