Everyone who practices massage treatment in New York State must have a licence from the Office of the Professions of the New York State Education Department. To qualify for a NY State Education Department of Regents licence, the candidate must have successfully completed a programme lasting at least 1,000 hrs. and must have passed a state licence exam.
As well as the training and exam qualifications, applicants for admission to massage must have attended high schools or similar, be at least 18 years of age, be US citizens or legal foreigners, have a good command of English, have a good morale and have taken a CPR course within three years of admission.
Unauthorised pursuit of a trade within the jurisdictional framework of the Office of Professions is a penal offence which is a Category E offence. Anyone who suspects that a massage has not been licensed can inform the New York Professional Misconduct Enforcement System. The NYS test cannot, however, be used instead of the NYS test and does not entitle anyone to practise law in New York State.
The New York State massage therapist must present a recent New York Health Insurance New York Clinic certification stating that they are currently practicing under a license. Ayurvedic massage therapist must sign up every three years to practise in New York. The consumer can certify that a therapist is entitled to perform the massage by visiting the office of the professions or calling them at 518.474.3817.
