"is an ideal place for fall paper seekers. Near the northwestern edge of Dutchess County are the offspring of the Livingston, Astor and Montgomery family and the iconic Beekman Arms, America's oldest continually run 1766 inns. The Rhinebeck offers 35 leagues of meadows, brooks and woody rolling countryside with stunning views over the Hudson River.
a marvellous stop is at the Bash Bish Water Falls, Route 344 East at Rt. 22, 20 min walking from the parking lot. You take Rt. 23 Westward to Hudson. "There are so many nice rides in Orange County, but two of my favourites are Route 302 to Pine Bush with a stunning distant look at the Shawangunk Mountain to your lefthand, and the other is the Orrs Mill Road....a short cut from Salisbury Mills to Cornwall with a stunning look at hills, dales and the high plateau of the Metro North Railroad tressl!
In autumn my favourite ride(s) go from New Paltz over the "Ridge" to High Falls over the Mountain Rest Rd. There' s lovely forested areas on both sides of the street on the first part of the ride that leads to the Mohonk Resort entry, and then, as you descend the other side, there are stunning vistas of the farmland below and the Catskill Mountains in the faraway.
A further favourite is the New Paltz Western trail on the 299 through Wallkill View Farms, where on the way up the ridge you will see rolling grass balls, corn stalks and gourds on the field awaiting to be plucked, and then, after the connection with the 44-55 Western trail on the way to Kerhonkson, further breathtaking vistas of the Catskills and the valley below.
Snail and Cheryl agree - here is their descriptions of Cheryl's first itinerary above. The Clove Valley Road from Gardiner to High Falls is one of my favourite drives. The trail passes through the Mohonk Preserve with stunning vistas of the mostly "invisible" part of the Shawangunk cliff. The next favourite is the High Point Mountain Road from Samsonville Road to Watson Holllow Road with some great vistas of the Ashokan Reservoir.
If you like taking photos, the old abandoned motel and looking at the leaves are the best. "Greene County Route 25 (right on Route 23C, just after passing Haines Falls (west) through Onteora Park in Greene County. Also Route 28 to Phoenicia is very beautiful.
Uninterrupted view along Esopus Creek. Catskill Railroad also organises weekend sight seeing trips with its classic coaches. ¿Cunningham Rd, Durham> Wonderful views....pine falling, plus marvellous colour.
