History, Artistic Direction & Facts | Royal Shakespeare Company

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), formerly (1875-1961) Shakespeare Memorial Company, an England theatre group with its headquarters in Stratford-upon-Avon, which has a long tradition of Shakespeare-performances. His repertory is still focused on works by William Shakespeare and other Elizabethan and Jacobin theatremists. Established in 1875, the company was initially affiliated with Stratford's Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (opened in 1879; devastated by fire in 1926), which had been established through the endeavours of Charles Edward Flower.

It was the scene of an yearly Shakespeare play fest, and the local Season Company was named Shakespeare Memorial Company. The company, which until then had been one of the most respected in Great Britain, received a royal certificate in 1925. New Shakespeare Memorial Theater (opened in 1932) was re-named Royal Shakespeare Theater in 1961, and the ensemble was also re-named at the inauguration.

She also founded a second session in London, first at the Aldwych Theater and then, from 1982 to 2002, at the Barbican, which allowed her performers to work year-round. Though it no longer resides in a particular London theater, the RSC appears there on a regular basis.

During the first ten years of the 21 st cent. the company carried out an extensive overhaul of its Stratford facility. Both of the company's principal theaters, the Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theaters, were shut down in 2007 to allow for their extension and restoration, which was finalized in 2010. The Courtyard Theater, which was on the premises of The Other Place Studiotheater, was the RSC's headquarters during this year.
