A new hardness zone map for New York
The USDA released its new map of hardship areas at a news briefing this mornings. The resistance zone is determined by the low median temperatures in cold winters, a decisive - if not the only - determinant of which crops will live in cold winters. In comparison to the 1990 release, the zone limits in this issue of the map have changed in many areas.
The new map uses meteorological station readings from the 30-year span 1976-2005, which is mainly due to the use of long-term and more recent temperatures. On the other hand, the 1990 map was built on temperatures over a timeframe of only 13 years (1974-1986). However, some of the changes in the areas are the results of new, more advanced ways of charting areas between meteorological wards.
This includes for the first and for the first to take into account aspects such as height differences, the proximity to large waters and the location on the site, e.g. valleys and ridges. The new map also used thermal information from many more locations than the 1990 map.

The 80 million growers of HALF THE NATION are today formally proclaimed a half zone when the U.S. Department of Agriculture releases the first updated Plant Hardiness Zone Map since 1990. The new map is not a technical endorsement of a climate change pattern, the agencies says - a different record is used in it than in these longer-term projections - but it is a more precise view of growth patterns across America, especially in tough areas such as the mountain regions, which in earlier releases were classified as too hot or too chill.
"The growth in our current computational capabilities allows the research group to incorporate into their algorithm things they knew were important in 1990 but could not take into account," said Catherine Woteki, Chief Scientist and Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics at the USDA, in a recent USDA session. Although I've always considered myself a Zone 5B, I'm now formally there, no longer in Zone A - so I'm half the official warm. The new New York State Map is on top; I also took a look at Texas, for example, where I could see a similar displacement to the warm 50 per cent (new East Texas Map below).
This new Plant Zone Hardiness Map is based on 1976-2005 figures in preliminary calculation, with the addition of recent years having no effect on the result - especially not on the 30-year mean values of the substantially extremes (the colder of the year). Climate scientists investigating climate changes are looking for a trend in overall mean annual climate changes over a 50 to 100 year span.
This map from 1990 is based on 1974-1986 dates. "It' s fun," Woteki said, "and a really good moment to have it, because I just got my first catalogue of plants by post this week." The" new mathematics", she says, will provide some good purchases - especially for those who are in another zone and feel adventure.
Included in the calculation are 7,983 station number. Immediately find your state or zone postcode. Finished designs were examined by a group of climate researchers, agrometeorologists and horticulture specialists - a trial that Woteki enchantingly called " soil truthing " - to find mistakes. ADDITIONAL for growers, tree growers and growers are among those who use the PLM most, as the information is also used in research projects that involve the evaluation of Harvest Risks Insurances and the distribution of tropical plants and bugs.
