Southwest NY State, just southwest of Lake Ontario and the Mohawk Valley, is dominated by the large dismembered Allegheny Tableland (also known as the Apalachian Highlands), a succession of craggy plateaus that form part of the greater Apalachian system. Situated in the east of the plateaus, just two hrs just off New York City, the undulating Catskill Mountains are known for their abundant fauna in wooded areas, footpaths and skiing areas.
