The MHC is part of New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), the biggest community hospital and health care system in the state. The Metropolitan is situated in an area where East Harlem is merging with the Upper East Side and Yorkville. It is physically situated from First to Second Avenue and from East 97th to East99th Street.
It offers a broad spectrum of populations of patients and clinical pictures. The Metropolitan Hospital Center was created in September 1875 as a homeopathic hospital. Created by the New York City Department of Public Charities and Correction on Wards Island. Later it was known as Ward's Island Hospital.
The hospital relocated to Blackwell's Island (now known as Roosevelt Island) in 1894. Occupying the former New York City Asylum for the Insane, it was re-named Metropolitan Hospital. Frederick Wiseman made a hospital E.R. doc in 1969 entitled Hospital, which won two Emmys for outstanding achievements in news documentation - individuals and outstanding achievements in news documentation programming, and in 1994 the National Movie Registry chose the movie for conservation.
