a?l?nd /?stæt?n a?l?nd/ is a district of New York Downtown, New York, United States, in the southwestern part of the town. From New Jersey, Staten Island is divided by the Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull and from the remainder of New York by New York Bay.
Staten Island is the least densely settled of the five districts with a total of 468,730 inhabitants, but the third biggest with an area of 59 square miles (153 km2). Staten Island is co-extensive with Richmond Co., the most southern province in New York State. The municipality was formally appointed a municipality of Richmond until 1975.
Sometimes Staten Island was referred to by residents who felt they had been ignored by the municipal authorities as "the lost community". It can be reached via the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn and the Outerbridge Crossing, Goethals Bridge and Bayonne Bridge to New Jersey. The Staten Island Railway, which departs from the St. George to Tottenville River from the St. George Shipping Station, has a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) coach and an MTA express railway line.
New York City's five districts, Staten Island is the only one that does not have underground express traffic. Free Staten Island Ferry links the district with Manhattan and is a favourite touristic destination overlooking the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Lower Manhattan.
