I ate a great deal of Indian foods in my lifetime, first the English guy when I grew up in the UK (where "Curry" recently outdid fishy and chipy in its various implementations as a domestic favorite); and then the US side in Manhattan, where my man and I comfortably resided near Sixth Street's curry rows.
Before some of the city's Indian restaurants began to showcase the more demanding side of their food, we as food lovers were thrilled that Cinnamon, the place that opened on the edge of Rhinebeck last June, presented lesser-known local food along with the normal menu.
On a calm week evening we were welcomed by aromatic flavours, the gentle sounds of Indian tunes and a smiley host. She has travelled throughout India and studied local cuisine, and the menus reflect this by blending mild foods, lesser-known foods and the more aromatic recipes from South India and Sri Lanka, where shellfish play an important role.
We' ve chosen to try one thing as a point of reference and try new meals. So we selected Kingfisher beer from the Indian beer shortlist (there are also wine, and a full pub is soon to come), and gnawed papadams as we were reading the cuisine. We ordered a garlic-nan, lightened with coriander spots, and a wholemeal bread with an interesting tough structure as a side dish to our starters.
Chefs present other "exotic" meals on their menus. We' ve chosen one of the starter of the month: spinaceous and home-made cheesy breads, the so-called sparkling wine. Usually the way to make the knödel (I found later) is to wind boiled, minced, spiced spicy Spinach around scoops of ground panneer cheeses and let them fall in warm olive for a few seconds.
Orangensee was a spicy tomato-honey gravy, and the "dumplings" were such a sweet -smelling, velvet treat that I didn't want to part with. The other starter, Calamari - a rare Indian dish - with paprika, cloves and onion, was welcomed by Shiwanti, who helped us navigating through the offers.
