Secrets of Hudson's success
Hudson's exquisite East London Show Room shows a trendy element that is also reflected in his shoes. The Hudson Group has more than twice its turnover in the last six years, with a turnover of around 15 million US dollars for the year ended in May 2010 and more than 17 million US dollars for 2011. During a 1990 slump, Hudson was introduced as a trend-setting but affordably priced men's line by Bund and CEO Mark Verona.
Hudson shoes were initially made in Italy, but it wasn't long before manufacturing was moved to Portugal, which helped the company to lower its prices while maintaining consistent levels of product qualitiy. Contrary to other well-known men's UK labels such as Church's, Trickers and Grenson, Hudson has been looking for an alternative to Goodyear welded designs to attract a younger, 20- to 40-year-old, fashion-conscious newcomer.
The Ellington, a pointed male grogue with a cement base, first introduced to the market in 2005, remains the brand's best-seller. Founded in 2004, Hudson is a 100-piece line that now represents 90 per cent of global wholesaling with a total of 400 customers, among them Kurt Geiger, Office, Schuh and Asos.com.
At a lower price than Hudson, the line has an unmistakable look: thin sole and wash able and old leather in smooth, autumn colours. Hudson's Hudson has overhauled the sale of Hudson, which works with specialized bank account holders such as Liberty of London. In 2008 Hudson extended into the women's sector, focusing the androgyne look of the label on smaller slats.
Hudson also provides products for woman. Begun in the early'09, the women's shoes retailing for $230 to $400 ($260 to $320 for men). "Our women's store in the USA is now larger than men's," says Haddon, who is one of the brand's fans, Agyness Deyn and Sienna Miller. The men's Gladiator and espadrilles collections for the Sprint of'11 include shoes with the typical "battered" look.
Haddon said to the ladies, after she had established a fan base for bootees, Brogues and male flat shoes in the ladies line, that she would soon be introducing higherheelers. He of Hudson now has 65 bankrolls in the U.S., among them Oak in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Tani in Manhattan; American Rag in Los Angeles; Bloomingdale's; and Saks Fifth Avenue on-line.

"H by Hudson is offering classy, forward-looking designs that are not only unique in terms of style, but also very well crafted," says Blackbird proprietor Nicole Miller. American Rag Chief Executive Mark Werts, who has been marketing the Hudson Men's Line for at least five years, praised the classic, relaxed character of the line.
Whereas the USA represents only 5 per cent of overall turnover, in the last six-month period turnover there has risen by 50 per cent. Every year, the firm presents its Hudson collection at Capsule in New York and Las Vegas. Among the most important customers are Galeries Lafayette in Paris and Seibu in Hong Kong.
In Japan and Australia, too, turnover is up. Hudson will be launching an e-commerce website to mark the brand's twentieth birthday in the autumn of this year.
