Albany to New Square Weekend - Hudson River Valley Forum
We' re arriving in Albany the weekend before. So, we are looking for something to do and where we can spend the nights between Albany and New for a Saturday and Sunday evening. There are picturesque itineraries and nice restaurant with refreshing cuisine. Albumy-New Paltz are just over an hours apart, so there's not too much "in between," but there's a whole bunch of things you can do.
Where are you ready to go? When you are ready in the opposite of New Paltz, George is about an hr northern of Albany (and thus 2 hr from Mohonk), but has much of everything - a golden age fort (William Henry), sea and mountain, miniature golf und ices.
While Lake George itself is not the most interesting, there are astonishing places to eat and shop near Saratoga Springs. When you travel in August, Saratoga is definitely a worthwhile place to be. It is a funny thing for children to go to the circuit for breakfasts in the mornings - it is before the crowd arrives and you can see the horse training.
So if that's further than you're interested in, your best wager is somewhere else in Hudson Valley/Catskills. The Columbia County (on the other side of the Hudson River from New Paltz, has sweet little cities (Hudson, Rhinebeck) with great stores and great dining. Ghent, NY has an open-air sculpted courtyard that is child-friendly (ArtOmi.org), and there is a fire museum in Hudson (I've never been there, but I've been hearing good things).
Hopefully you plan to go to the near Minnewaska State Park while you are in Mohonk. Walkway over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, hire a bicycle from New Paltz and travel by train to Kingston.
