State castle, NY
We were asked to construct a saunas facility for a Bucolian property on the Hudson River that did not enter a site of barn, glasshouses and a large 1940' property. It also had to include the various pump and equipments for an open-air bath and a new wood whirlpool that we placed on the top of the hills from the saunas.
Situated on an existent supporting rampart, the facility offers superb views of the Hudson River while serving as a target on the 90 hectare area. Having already discovered the historic milk and greenhouse, granary and large manor houses, the saunas appear to be an architectonic foolishness of modernity.
Functional the bath is close to the traditionnal Finish bath, with a real wooden oven and a mud-top. Conceived as a square body with a distinctive range of materials, comprising an epe-rainscreen, unpainted bronce covering and windows, and on the garden rooftop, the chimney is covered by corrosion-resistant stainless steal.
Inside, the seat and detachable base plate is made of lamella cedars, while the sides and top are covered with tongues and notches. Big plates of soaped stone are covering the locker room shelves and serving as a thermal shield around the electrical and wooden ovens. Horizontally, the window frames the view of the Hudson River and the Catskills in the faraway.
During the nights, the saunas and locker rooms are lit by niches in the wall and under the benches. There is an outside showers protruding from the facade over the appliance room doors and rain down on the reused blue stone panels at the foot of the submerged entrance area, which are reaped from the property.
