Day trippers are persons who visit a place or attractions from home and return home the same day. An excursion of this kind does not mean spending a single day away from home, as is the case with a vacation. Day trips are a favourite way of relaxing and recreational activities for those who look after small kids or those who are too infirm to be able to travel lightly, or who have domestic animals, or for whom the logistic or the costs of a overnight stay away from home can be prohibitively expensive.
During the Middle Ages, a place for such a day would be either sacred (to a near shrine) or commercially, for example to a funfair. In the middle of the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries, the train journey, often carried out with day-trip passes, flourished. Lieutenant General Slocum's excursion was one example.
From the mid-1880s, biking became a very favourite excursion sport, especially among municipal and local labour. Company trips and trips to churches or chapels were very much appreciated until the seventies.
