The Essence Communications Inc., Edward Lewis, Clarence O. Smith, Cecil Hollingsworth et Jonathan Blount gründeten die Essence Communications Inc. ECI and began in May 1970 with the edition of the magazine Essence. 3 ][4] Lewis and Smith named the book a "lifestyle magazine for sophisticated afroamerican women". Recognizing that the demographics of immigrant girls were ignored, they saw Essence as a way to benefit from a practically unaffected female population.

Instead, these blacks can see themselves in different highlights in Essence. 2] The magazine contains the categories Celebrity, Fashion, Beauty, Hair, Love and Point-of-View.

9 ] The magazine covers subjects such as families, societal questions in the afroamerican society, afroamerican womens in the army and HIV-positive. Celebs like Michelle Obama and Whitney Houston have been released on the front page and presented in the magazine through interview and series. Essence was initially started mainly as a magazine for fashions, but has developed into a guide for Black and White girls in many areas of the world.

Presidents Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton had a number of outstanding performances at the Essence Music Fest in 2007, and in 2009 the event was hosted in honour of Barack Obama's inaugural and presidential election with Beyoncé as headlining act. 15 ] In 2008, after the partnership with Essence, to design and record a co-branded feature Black in America:

The Essence has been renamed the Essence Dance Festivals in 2013 to present the Essence Dance and Dance Festivals as more than just a musical festiv.
