The 1-mile circuit follows a mostly counterclockwise circuit from the city centre to the country side of Rhinebeck, just over 3,000 inhabitants. It is the shallowest of the run, as the riders head eastwards along Rhinecliff Road, right on Mill Street and then right on Mill Road, which begins the track that leads the riders into the green just south of the city.
One of the most beautiful parts of the course is the early and central part, as the trackers drive along Mill Road to the southward direction and then turn off onto the third metre on the other. From kilometre 4 to 5, skiers will see the first true hill of the event, the first of a series of mostly gentle slopes that they will come across over the next few kilometres.
Approximately one and a half miles along Hook Road, the walkers then turn right into Cove Road, where they begin a bend that leads them near the coast of Vanderburgh Cove. As South Mill Road returns to Morton Road - just like the riders between 7 and 8 Miles - the riders begin the course that will take them the nearest to the Hudson River.
On the Rhinecliff Road, the route takes you to the Rhinecliff community and a short bend through its roads, past Amtrak Waterfront Railway Stations. Some fast turns in Rhinecliff bring the skiers on the Ryan Road, for a kilometre-long round trip into the outdoors.
Finally, when the riders return to Rhinecliff Road, where they turn off to the lefthand side and return eastwards along Rhinecliff Road to the Science and Technology Fair. As of the date of the event (14 October), the mean low is 38°F and the mean high 62°F.
