The NYC Weekend Trips by Train, Bus & Boat
The biggest town in the whole wide globe (come to me, brother), but sometimes even hard-core New Yorkers need a trip out of the town for the weekends. There is only one issue in organizing this trip - you don't have a vehicle. There is no need to "borrow" your roommate's vehicle to spend a great week-end in New York.
There are nine fantastic NYC week-end trips that you can take by rail, coach or even boating. You have to put your handbag away before we deal with the entire logistic of the following week-end excursion-idea. Each week-end excursion is different (shocker), but no matter what time of year or why, this checklist will serve as a model for virtually every NYC week-end excursion.
With the Outbreaker Traveller Day Pack ($99) - With 21 litres, this day pack is ideal for day trips or romantically relaxing week-end outings. BLOCKWORKS Chino Trousers ($125) - Look chic (and wrinkle-free!) at any supper, winetasting or barbecue in these amazing, light-weights. There is a wet/dry pocket ($49) to keep the rough things away from the good things; this thing takes everything you put on it and saves the day.
Traveller Double Kits - Everything you need for a well-kept week-end, in a convenient double suit. The iPhone stand mount ($6) & Joby Gorillapod stand ($19) - Nothing says "I'm not in NYC this weekend" like ill time-lapse and fantastic instagram music.
Best part of life in New York is you never have to go again. NYC's rail system is one of the best in North America and offers the following options: the way to kick your NYC week-end get away with the crazy hammers. Monday morning is not the Hamburg's (not really), which means a week-end trip in Monday morning is more cheap (and funnier) than you think.
Get great on your week-end get away and eventually learning how to windsurf on some of the best surfing out there. Hire a snowboard at the Air and Speed Boardshop ($40 days / $20 additional wetsuits) or take your own. Once the swell sucks (it happens), float at Ditch Plains Beach and hit back a driftwood ale at Montauk Brewing.
A small-scale, family-run seaside resort full of facilities including a yoga class, swimming pools, paddleboarding, horse back-riding and sweet walks. Get the Jamaica Station in Queens and take the Jamaica Station to Montauk by regular scheduled trains OR take the Hampton Jitney (it may sound chic, but it's a bus) for $28 each way.
In spite of the notorious" ice tea" Long Island gains in popularity for its vines in North Fork. "The North Fork " actually consists of 11 small villages like Cutchoque, Mattituck and Greenport-but don't wory- they're all on the sea and they all have grape. MTA even organises day trips and tastings ($67) at the Duck Walk Wineyards Toasting Room in Cutchogue, which will include transport, tastings, lunches and a stopover at Briermere Farms if you can't make up your mind.
You have to keep your belly full to make up for the day with a barbecued fountina, talleggio and savoury fungus on the North Fork Food Truck or just picking your own crisp grapes (literally everywhere) or walking along the coast...... It' s noteworthy that North Fork has some great walks on the beaches and places to discover tide moist areas, like Orient State Park (they have kayaking rental), but let's be genuine - you're in North Fork to have a glass of good vin.
Silver Sands is an enchanting hotel (and seaside cabins) in Greenport ($125/night including supper for two people). Take Penn Station to Mattituk (one way: $29. 25 spike / $21. 25 off peak) OR take Hampton JitneyGreenport or Cutchogue ($19 one-way). When you want to inspire your employees with your week-end schedules, just tell them that you have been hiking over the weekends.
Appalachian Trail Metro North Station could be my favourite stop in the run. Funny fact, this ward only costs $10,000, which is surprising. "is this another NYC spot on NYC windsurfing and beach?" you ask. and New York City is right on the ocean, so get used to it.
Locals can take the underground line A to Rockaway Beach, but Long Beach is more beautiful, less overcrowded and the waves are simply better. Yes, it's more difficult to reach, but that dilutes the crowd, and if you have the luxury of making your trip a week-end trip, that's a good thing.
The Long Beaches charges an entrance fees ($12!), which is shit, but the waves are really great. It is only a few minutes walk from the railway stations, so the only difficulty is the brief journey by rail. There are many different types of hotel in Long Strand, such as the Allegria Hotel, but to be honest, you will be on the shore all day long.
You can find a lovely air bnb list in Long beach and plot your things there for the weekends. On the MTA Express to Jamaica, then LIRR to Long Island Station ($13. 50 spike / $9. 50 off peak). MTA even provides Long Beaches package deals during the summers, which include the trip and entrance to the beaches for $21.
However, sometimes the coach is the best way to get out of NYC and have a great outing. The Bacchus Restaurant Bar & Billard offers 500 different types of beer and cuisine. The Adirondack Trailways Coach from Port Authority to New Paltz Town ('22) Just go down the road to Rock and Snow and see your host.
Covertly on the advance for a decennium, Phoenicia has become a hipher paradise for part-time woodcutters and ancient couple and offers some amazing riverside tours. Phoenicia is far enough away from the town to keep the unenthusiasts away and is a 3-hour hike. Better yet, they have cab transport to and from the stream for only $5 a ride.
Phoenicia Diner (try the trout) puts the streets on the menu, but if you're in this fashionable tip, try Brio's Pizzeria or Peace Vodka, one of the best nightclubs out of burg. Yeah, Atlantic town center is crap. But it might be rewarding to go on a week-end trip to the AC just to throw eggs at the extinct Trump Plaza before it is demolished.
And I don't think you can have an Instagram in NYC if you haven't been to use it. Just 90 mins. from the town, the 500 hectare area of the Saint King Arts Center is an extensive protected area with tens of statues and large format facilities. When you can move from infrastructural collapses to the dwindling mid-layer under huge metallic I-beam statues, you release a dedicated ironic label on your snap chat.
Lots of folks are treating it like a day out, but it' s just beautiful at Saint King Lodge, and one of the many services offered by the Stert King area (New Windsor) in the form of airborne bikes will take your sweet tooth and enjoy the whole outing. USA Coach is offering a return journey of $45 to and from Sun City.
I' ve actually gone to New York with the East Shore surfing in my head, so I'm always shy when folks are questioning my passion for the water. This is my favourite NYC week-end excursion about the boat. Favourite place near New York because even though it's only a two-hour drive, I still think I'm a few steps away from the town.
There are no vehicles on this 1 mile, 32 mile section of unspoilt beaches, so you'll immediately notice the stresses leaving your shoulder as soon as you step one step on this gradual sanctuary. Walk the western end of Robert Moses State Strand, walk the 8-mile long wildlife area around swamps and mudflats, or go crazy celebrating in the Pines and the Grove - the LGBT partys that have been thriving for years.
Just a few are rented for short trips, but Ocean Beach, the biggest municipality on Fire Island, has The Palms and Blue Waters Hotel. They can also go camping on Watch Hill Campgrounds (my favourite spot). LIRR to Bay Shore and take Fire Island Ferry ($19 round trip) to Kismet, Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Dunewood, Atlantique, Ocean Beach, Seaview or Ocean Bay Park.
While NYC is astonishing, some of the best places to stay in New York are outside the town. Schedule your NYC week-end trips by rail, coach or boating and experience walking, camp, museums, night life, vineyard, surfing, beach and much more within a few hour of NYC. We will immediately mail you a shipping summary as an additional benefit.
