The Central Community College in Hastings (opened in 1966 as Central Nebraska Technology College, later known as Central Technology College) occupied part of the premises of the Naval Ammunition Depot and used some of its former buildings It was the first multi-country professional school in Nebraska. Columbus Central Community College (opened in 1969) was initially Platte Junior College, then Platte College Technical, and was the first county-supported community college in Nebraska.
The Central Community College on Grand Island was opened in 1976; the central administrative office of the College was set up on Grand Island in 1974.
