While New York may be the largest town in the whole wide globe, the masses of people, the siren and the cars can do a lot for even the Big Apple's toughest fond. Taxi from the city's impressive classic train stations to Independence National Historical Park to see the Liberty Bell and the rooms where the Declaration of Independence was initialled and closed.

Slightly more than an hours drive from New York City, this breathtaking statue garden in Hamilton, New Jersey, houses works by establishing and aspiring art. There are also photographic and dancing workshop facilities in the theme area, making it a great place to try something else while taking a break from Manhattan's endless hustle and bustle. 2.

Formerly intended as the Hudson River School Paintings Gallery, the Arts Centre is named after Storm King Mountain and provides excellent picnic viewpoints (there is also a local café). The Guggenheims once had part of it, but it is home to the beautiful Hempstead House, constructed at the beginning of the twentieth-century which originally was intended for the imitation of Castle Kilkenny in Ireland (you can visit the large rooms and impressive rooms for a small fee).

This signposted wooded route leads through old oaks forests, the route starts at the visitor's front door - tickets are available at the Visitors' Centre. Perpetuated by Bruce Springsteen and beaten by the sick wind of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the Asbury Park promenade is a New Jersey institutional - and only an hours drive from NYC.

Or, come early, hover on the shore and make yourself look like a hero in a song from Borne to Run. From Grand Central, take the 80-minute drive to Beacon on the east side of the Hudson River. New York is flooded with breathtaking scenery.

Walking barely four leagues, this brief stroll offers a magnificent view of the Hudson Valley, through forests and along the shores of the Manhattan riverbank, which finally leads down the western side of Manhattan, past Lady Liberty and into the Atlantic Ocean. The itineraries are well signposted and you are never far from civilisation. You can reach Garrison on the Hudson line from Grand Central in an hours and a half.

See the beautiful Olana home that the American landscapist Frederic Church made. Located just outside the city, the church manor took inspiration from the Farsi sketches he had seen on his travels in the Middle East and now houses works by the Hudson River School of painters, of which the church was the main member.

It is open from Tuesday to Sunday and the entrance is only possible by guided tours - booking on-line. Opposite the Hudson at the entrance to the Catskill Forest Preserve is the enchanting pair of Tannersville and Phoenicia. Away from the Atlantic coastline of Long Island, Fire Island can really be feeling truly secluded and tranquil if you choose the right time to come (i.e., don't come on Labour Day or July 4 as the crowd flocks).
