Known as the most beautiful of the Great Estates of the Hudson Valley, Montgomery Place sits perched high above the mighty Hudson River looking west toward the Catskill Mountains. Currently under the care and protection of Historic Hudson Valley, Montgomery Place is a picturesque trip back into 18th and 19th century America.

Originally built in 1802, Montgomery Place was the home of Janet Livingston Montgomery, widow of General Richard Montgomery, the first hero of the American Revolution. The home was redesigned mid-century in the Classical Revival traditions by Andrew Jackson Downing in the picturesque style. Extensive gardens, follies and lawns were incorporated into the design. But none more attractive and more inspiring than the view created from the west side of the house.

From the front of Montgomery Place one has sweeping views across the great lawn stretching east down to the orchards and beyond. The lawn is a prime example of the Romantic Landscapes invented and realized in the Hudson Valley. On your visit to Montgomery Place, bring a picnic and enjoy a peaceful lunch under the trees at one of the many picnic tables scattered around. Or spread a quilt on the lawn and relax in the dappled shade of the great oaks.

Surrounding the lawn are all the parts of the estate waiting for you to stroll and enjoy. Take a slow and peaceful walk through the famous gardens and greenhouses, tour the house or walk the trails and roads down towards the river or through the woods. Sample the jams and baked goods at the orchard, purchase special treasures at the gift shop or just laze around the grounds enjoying the day.

At various times of the year, Montgomery Place hosts festivals and fairs out on the great lawn. From antiques to Hudson Valley wines, enjoy yourself at these festive outdoors events. Located in Annandale-on-Hudson in northern Dutchess County, Montgomery place is an ideal destination to discover the beauty and majesty of the Hudson Valley.
